Charges not filed against accused jailer - No criminal charges will be filed at this time against Jackson County jailer Jeff Burnette, who was dismissed March 26 following indecent exposure allegations. “The women, or at least one of them, who made the allegations would have to testify for there to be a case,” said Jackson County...see note above

Jackson County inmate dies following head injuries - An inmate who collapsed at the Jackson County Detention Center Sunday (May 9) died the next day at Mission Hospitals in Asheville. Bobby Eugene Wallen Jr., 48, of Coachman Lane, Tuckasegee, died one day after being admitted to the hospital’s neuro-trauma center. According to Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe, Wallen had been in the detention center....

County files suit over Cashiers library site - In an effort to move ahead with construction of a library addition in Cashiers, county officials last week (May 3) filed suit against a Cashiers couple. At issue is a sales contract signed in November by which Jim Nichols and his wife, Kimberly Diane Nichols, agreed to sell Jackson County 3.5 acres in Cashiers for $1.5 million. The Nichols tract adjoins the library and Southwestern Community College’s Cashiers campus....

Western’s main campus entrance off N.C. 107 to be closed for five weeks - Western Carolina University’s main entrance at the intersection of N.C. 107 and Centennial Drive will be closed to all traffic for five weeks beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, May 14, as the university begins the road construction phase of its current building boom. The entrance is being closed to allow contractors to relocate a portion of Centennial Drive around Robinson Administration Building. Six candidates file for seats on school board - Six candidates will be on the ballot for two seats on the Jackson County Board of Education in the July 20 election. When the deadline came Friday, candidates who had filed for the District 1 seat were Mark Brooks, Jarrett Crowe, Jim Hartbarger and Barbara Jones. Cute kid - Brandy McCardle of Sylva is the first-place winner for the “Cute Kids” category in The Sylva Herald’s annual Mountain Spring photo contest. Judged by Herald Advertising Manager Margo Gray and coordinated by Herald graphic designer Nick Breedlove, this year’s competition generated a record-setting 106 entries. Georgia trucker dies in Saturday accident - The driver of a tractor-trailer died as the result of an accident late Saturday morning east of Sylva. Trooper S.K. Bowers of the N.C. Highway Patrol identified the victim as 29-year-old Chadwick Heath Milam of Gillsville, Ga. Milam was traveling west on U.S. 23-74 around 11:45 a.m. when the accident occurred near Crawford Cemetery Road, according to Bowers. The vehicle ran off the right side of the road, struck a guardrail and then slid into an embankment before coming to rest on its top, the trooper said....
