Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Selma Butler

Selma Butler, 88, of Skyland Care Center, Sylva, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, after a period of declining health.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 10, at Fairview Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell  officiated.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she worked at Sylco Manufacturing. She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Lillie Buchanan.

Surviving are one niece, Betty Painter of Sylva, and other nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Jackson County.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Sallie Crowe

Sallie Crowe, 73, of Cherokee's Yellowhill community, died Friday, May 7, 2004, at Cherokee Hospital.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, at Yellowhill Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Roland Whitaker and James "Bo" Parris officiated.

Daughter of the late Ossie and Martha Toineeta Crowe, she was a native and lifelong resident of Cherokee and a honeysuckle vine basketmaker.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Crowe; one son, Guyon Crowe; and two sisters, Dinah French and Stacy Toot; and two brothers, John Dobson and Guy Crowe.

Surviving are three daughters, Faye Bird and Lisa Crowe of Cherokee and Gaynell Crowe of Hendersonville; one sister, Katie Jessan of Cherokee; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Tenilla Stamper

Tenilla RayLynn Stamper, 23, of Cherokee's Soco community died Monday, May 3, 2004.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 7, at Acquoni Baptist Chapel. The Revs. Jim Park and James "Bo" Parris and Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in Washington Family Cemetery on Jenkins Creek.

A native of Cherokee, she was a daughter of Ray Stamper Jr. of Cherokee and Mary Maney and Chad Swayney of Cherokee. She was an honors graduate of Cherokee High School. She completed two years at Western Carolina University and was a member of Acquoni Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Jonah and Luzene Crowe Washington.

Surviving, in addition to her parents, are two sons, Timothy and Anthony Allison of the home; four brothers, Matthew Anthony Carey, Jonah Carey and Nicholas Swayney, all of the home, and Ray Stamper III of Cherokee; one sister, Lynsey Stamper of Cherokee; paternal grandparents, Ray Stamper Sr. of Cherokee and June Smith of Cherokee; maternal grandparents, Roy Maney of Cherokee and Sara Jane Wabhekeck of Cherokee; and paternal great-grandmother, Roxanne Stamper of Cherokee.

Crisp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Tooni

Dorothy T. Tooni, 71, of Wright's Creek Road, Cherokee, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at her residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, at Rock Springs Baptist Church, of which she was a member. The Revs. Dan Lambert and Arthur Locust officiated. Burial was in Reed Cemetery.

A native of Swain County, she lived in Jackson County most of her life. She was a homemaker and daughter of the late Ammons and Lucinda Welch Tramper.

She was preceded in death by one brother, John Tramper; one sister, Sally T. George; and one granddaughter.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, Stan Tooni; one daughter, Agnes Tooni of Cherokee; four sons, Ammons Tooni, Stanley Tooni Jr., John David Tooni and Larch Tooni, all of Cherokee; one sister, Elzina Bradley of Cherokee; one brother, Leroy Tramper of Cherokee; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Christine Hooper

Christine Robinson Hooper, 86, of Cashiers, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital.
Moody Funeral Home will announce arrangements.

Alma Johnson

Alma Queen Johnson, 55, of Cherokee's Soco community, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 9, at the Cherokee Church of God. The Rev. Danny Conseen officiated. Burial was in Cucumber Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Victor Wildcatt, Bobby Cucumber, Earl Ammons, Bone Toineeta, Willard Ammons, Boug Catt and Jerry Littlejohn.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, she attended Cherokee Pentecostal Holiness Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Johnson, Jr.; her mother, Rachael Queen Cucumber; and two brothers.

Surviving are her father, Dave Cucumber; one daughter, Dawn Renee Johnson of the home; two sons, Anthony and Charles David Johnson, both of Cherokee; and one sister, Christine Toineeta, also of Cherokee.

Dillard Caldwell

Dillard Don Caldwell, 59, of Pot Leg Road, Waynesville, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, at his residence after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Vaughn Burnette and Neal Roland officiated. Burial was in Caldwell Cemetery in the Hemphill community.

A native of Haywood County, where he lived most of his life, he was a brick mason. He was a son of the late Mitchell and Viola Smith Caldwell.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Clifton Caldwell; and one sister, Hazel Caldwell.

Surviving are one daughter, Tammy Bryant of Cullowhee; four sisters, Ella Mae Grasty and Linda Campbell, both of Waynesville, Barbara Snells of Winter Garden, Fla., and Betty Holmer of Groveland, Fla.; one brother, John Caldwell of Sylva; and one granddaughter.

Nancy Shepherd

Nancy A. Shepherd, 89, of Franklin, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in a Macon County hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 14, in the chapel of Macon Funeral Home. The Revs. Andy Cloer, Charles Stevens and Wesley Hooper will officiate. Burial will be in Shepherd Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tom Elmore, Richard Adkins, Arnold Aiken, Jamie Cochran, Steve Carpenter and Mickey Carpenter.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Cicero Aiken and Ada Watson Aiken. She was a member and Sunday school teacher at Liberty Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Clay Nicholson, who died in 1943; and second husband, Wiley Shepherd, who died in 1986.

Surviving are two sons, Charles Nicholson of Albany, Ga., and Alan Shepherd of Franklin; one sister, Lillie Adkins of Hazelwood; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at the funeral home.

Ella Franks

Ella Mae Coward Franks, 77, of Neal Bryson Road, Glenville, died Friday, May 7, 2004, at Park Ridge Hospital in Fletcher after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 9, at Hamburg Baptist Church. The Revs. Johnny Norris and Matt Ledbetter officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a cook and dishwasher at Brown Skillet, a member of John's Creek Baptist Church and daughter of the late Tom and Lillie Belle Moore Coward.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Jane Franks; three sisters, Martha and Mona Coward and Mary Brown; four brothers, Verlin, Buster, Ray and David Coward; and four grandchildren.

Surviving are five daughters, Bessie Conner of Glenville, Lois Owens of Westminster, S.C., June Aiken of Cashiers, Ella Rhodes and Janet Ledford, both of Walhalla, S.C.; one son, Jessie Franks of Glenville; two sisters, Margaret Coggins and Jo Ann Robert of Washington; three brothers, Carl and Russell Coward, both of Washington, and the Rev. R.B. Coward of Cullowhee; 15 grandchildren; and 16 grandchildren.

Joseph Kinsland

Joseph "Joe" Kinsland, 65, of Sunset Farms Road, Whittier, died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Eddie Stillwell and Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in Thomas Memorial Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was owner and operator of Wilmot Grocery for 19 years. He was former owner and operator of Smokey Mountain Drag Strip and was former precinct chairman and former county chairman of the Republican party. He was a son of Beulah Cooper Kinsland of Whittier and the late John Taft Kinsland.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are one sister, Reva Bowers of Whittier; and one brother, Donald Kinsland of Whittier.

Johnson Sequoyah

Johnson Sequoyah, 65, of Cherokee died Thursday, May 6, 2004, after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Yellowhill Baptist Church. The Revs. James "Bo" Parris and Red Bradley officiated. Burial was in Yellowhill Veterans Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during Vietnam. He was the son of the late Lloyd Runningwolfe and Lizzie Watty Sequoyah.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Bobbie Cucumber Sequoyah.

Surviving are four daughters, Lizzie M. Sequoyah, Kina Elaine Cucumber Maney, both of Cherokee, Donna O'Neil of Philadelphia, Dawn Brown of Baltimore; three sons, Johnny and Brian Sequoyah and Todd Coolahan, all of Baltimore; one sister, Rosie Hornbuckle of Cherokee; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
