Jackson County officials survey a 10,000-square-foot plot at Mark Watson Park currently under consideration for location of a new county library. The site visit was part of a bus tour county leaders took April 27. County commissioners got a firsthand look at ongoing construction projects at Smoky Mountain High School and the Department of Social Services as well as the potential library site and the old Courthouse. Commissioners’ Chairman Stacy Buchanan, left, told the group that a two-story library building at the old Sylva High School site would offer the estimated 20,000 square-feet needed for the library’s future growth needs. A complete space needs study is due to the county/town library task force May 15, after which the group will begin a detailed site search. Few downtown property owners have come forward with property for sale, Buchanan said, making the park site a greater possibility. The task force will next meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 20, in Room 227 of the Justice Center. – Herald photo by Carey King |
