Dismissed jailer may face charges of sexual misconduct - A meeting was scheduled Wednesday, May 5, to determine whether a dismissed jailer will face criminal charges for alleged sexual misconduct. Jackson County jailer Jeff Burnette was dismissed March 26 following allegations that he exposed himself to female prisoners and made lewd remarks....


Paving Cowan Street - Paving on Cowan Street was finished April 28, moving First United Methodist Church one step closer to making its proposed family life center a reality. Church leaders and Sylva officials agreed two years ago that the church would fund improvements to Cowan Street in exchange for the closure of Church Street, which  bisects the church's campus. Drivers can now use Cowan as a substitute for the former Church Street route....


Another winner - "Trillims in the Park" by Phyllis Jarvinen of Webster is the first-place winner in The Sylva Herald's annual Mountain Spring photo contest. Judged by Herald Advertising Manager Margo Gray and coordinated by Herald graphic designer Nick Breedlove, this year's competition generated a record-setting 106 entries. Other winners are Tracey Grant of Cullowhee, grand prize; Christy Taylor of Whittier, second; Amanda McFalls of Tuckasegee, third; and Jean Kirkland of Sylva....

High Hampton Inn's McKee is dead at 89 - A Cashiers business and civic leader with family ties to Dillsboro and Sylva founders died Friday in Asheville. A 3:30 p.m. memorial service for William Dills McKee, son of Sylva entrepreneur E.L. McKee and North Carolina's first woman state senator, Gertrude Dills McKee, is scheduled for today (Thursday) on the lawn at High Hampton Inn. McKee, 89, was the grandson of Dillsboro founder William Allen Dills. He  spent most of his adult life managing High Hampton Inn....


Western to award honorary doctorates at May 8 graduation - Western Carolina University will bestow honorary doctorates on a longtime dean and on a former chairman of its board of trustees, and present a major alumni award, as the university holds spring commencement exercises Saturday, May 8.


SMHS students to stage Hello, Dolly! -Smoky Mountain High School's spring musical, Hello, Dolly!, will hit the stage at Western Carolina University's Hoey Auditorium this weekend, with performances scheduled at 7:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8. Featured performers include, from left, Nicholas Savell (Cornelius Hackl), Jenna DeGrove (Irene Molloy), J.D. Large (Barnaby Tucker), Bari-Anne Ryczek (Minnie Fay), Martha Neslen (Dolly) and Ollin Dunford (Horace Vandergelder). Under the direction of Tinnie Salzano with musical direction by Linda Haggard....


SCC to host spring commencements on Friday, Saturday - Commencement at Southwestern Community College will allow guests a little more elbow room this spring. Due to an increase in the number of graduates, college officials have opted to host two commencement ceremonies to provide graduates and their families with a more enjoyable and meaningful experience. "We have literally outgrown our auditorium," said Connie Haire, SCC's vice president of student and institutional development. "Our graduates have worked hard for this achievement and they want to share it with their family and close friends. In order for them to be able to do that, we chose to go to two ceremonies."
