TEACHERS across Jackson County are hard at work this week, just as they are throughout each day of every school year. During National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 3-9, we want to say "thank you" to all of the dedicated professionals who strive to provide their students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in both school and life.


AN ARTICLE on page 5C of this issue contains some incorrect information. Smoky Mountain High School 21st Century Scholars' spaghetti dinner and talk by Dan Rogers, the man who walked across America after Sept. 11, has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at SMHS. You can still call 586-2515 to reserve a free dinner ticket.


ROCKDALE BAPTIST CHURCH at Barkers Creek will hold a breakfast fund-raiser this Saturday, May 8, from 7 to 10 a.m. The menu will include bacon, eggs, sausage, biscuits, grits, gravy, homemade jelly and more. Cost for the all-you-can-eat meal will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for kids under 12. All proceeds will go to the Barkers Creek Cemetery Fund.


A MEMORIAL to Daniel Bryson that appeared in last week's paper did not include his mother's address. Those who knew Daniel may write to her at Mary Bryson, 262 Elm Street, Sylva, N.C. 28779.


EDWARD JONES, located across from Harold's, will host a live broadcast Tuesday, May 11, at 11:30 a.m. Featured will be Today show weatherman Willard Scott, who will discuss feeling young while growing older, setting goals in retirement and leaving a legacy of learning. Lunch will be provided. Seating is limited; R.S.V.P. at 586-3848.


A MARATHON TRAINING PROGRAM will begin today (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at the Jackson County Recreation Center in Cullowhee. For more information, contact Amy Palmer at 293-0011.


MICHAEL PEEK of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Sylva, has been selected by Citigroup's Corporate Operations and Technology to participate in its management trainee program. The Leadership Development Program focuses on developing managers with a broad perspective of the company's mission and includes three 12-month work assignments supplemented by extensive training and mentoring. Participants position themselves for opportunities including careers in anti-money laundering, corporate realty services, financial control, payment services, project management and technical support management. Peek has been with Citigroup for three years.


SOUL INFUSION Tea House & Bistro will present a free graduation concert featuring award-winning roots music artists Bailey Jester in honor of all Southwestern  Community College and Western Carolina University graduates. Saturday's (May 8) 9 p.m. show is open to all ages and will be held outdoors in the live music garden, weather permitting. Bailey Jester's music blends bluegrass, folk and acoustic pop and features rich harmonies and finely-crafted lyrics. The group is touring to promote its newly-released CD. The artists' award-winning debut, Above the Misery Line, was named Roots Album of the Year at the 2002 Just Plain Folks Music Awards. For information, see www.soulinfusion.com. or call 586-1717.


LARKIN FOURKILLER, a former Sylva resident, appeared on The History Channel's Tactical to Practical program April 27. The show is expected to air periodically during the next several weeks. Fourkiller appeared as a SWAT technical advisor for the episode's segment on sniper optics, which examined optical equipment and related SWAT tactics used by military and law enforcement personnel. Fourkiller currently operates Fourkiller Consulting, a police tactical training company based in Kokomo, Ind. He is a retired police captain.
