Paving Cowan Street

Paving on Cowan Street was finished April 28, moving First United Methodist Church one step closer to making its proposed family life center a reality. Church leaders and Sylva officials agreed two years ago that the church would fund improvements to Cowan Street in exchange for the closure of Church Street, which bisects the church's campus. Drivers can now use Cowan as a substitute for the former Church Street route. First Methodist will break ground for its new 13,000-square-foot building Sunday, May 9, during its 11 a.m. service. The structure - a portion of which will stand where Church Street is today - will include a gym, large meeting and dining area, commercial kitchen, and classrooms, a music room and a chapel for youth.
