Barbara Andrews
Barbara Illeana Dillard Andrews, 76, of 100 Overlook Drive, Cullowhee, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Mountain Trace Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
A memorial service for both her and her husband will be held later this summer.
She was a former teacher at Scotts Creek Elementary School and an avid quilter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W.G. Dillard and Georgia Stillwell Dillard; her husband, Clyde L. Andrews; one brother, W.B. Dillard; and one sister, Phyllis Claxton.
Surviving are two daughters, Denissa Schulman of Asheville and Debbie Nielsen of Woodstock, Ga.; two sisters, Pansy "Pam" Coates of Asheville and Jeannette Dodson of Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren.

Allen Fisher
Allen Burgin Fisher Jr., 74, of Sylva's Addie community, died unexpectedly Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Mission Hospitals in Asheville.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. David Burch and Benny Bagwell officiated. Burial was held at Addie Cemetery with military rites conducted by Sylva American Legion Post 104 and the U.S. Navy. Pallbearers were Travis Jones, Jason Henry, Jimmy Henry, David Fisher, Phil Fisher and Clay Cogdill. Honorary pallbearers were Boyce Deitz, Joe Mull, Harold Norman, Jerry Jones and Bud Jones.
A native of Jackson County, he was owner and operator of Fisher and Son Alignment, an avid fox hunter, and raised game chickens. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War, and was a son of the late Allen Burgin Fisher Sr. and Willie Miller Fisher.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jimmy Fisher; and one daughter, Ellen Fisher Elders.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Hill Fisher; one son, Steve Fisher of the home; one daughter, Debbie Henry of Sylva; one sister, Sarah Hines of Hilton Head Island, S.C.; two brothers, Lawrence and James Fisher, both of Sylva; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Frederick Arch
Frederick Horace "Fish–hound" Arch Sr., 62, formerly of Cherokee, died Thursday, April 29, 2004, in Toccoa, Ga.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 3, at Acquoni Baptist Chapel. The Rev. James "Bo" Parris, Dinah Welch and James Sneed officiated. Burial was in Arch Family Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Steve Youngdeer American Legion.
A native of Swain County, he was a son of the late Horace and Sara Reed Arch. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Bruce Arch; and four brothers, Charles Edward, Roger, Clayton and Treannie Arch.
Surviving are three sons, Frederick Horace Arch Jr., Albert Arch and Troy Arch, all of Cherokee; two daughters, Candy Martin and Pam Crowe, both of Cherokee; one brother, Bud Arch of Cherokee; four sisters, Sis Larch, Annabelle Marmon, Vange Laney and Theresa Rattler, all of Cherokee; and 10 grandchildren.

William McKee
William Dills McKee, 89, of Cashiers, died Friday, April 30, 2004.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at High Hampton Inn in Cashiers.
Born on June 6, 1914, in Sylva, he was a son of the late E.L. and Gertrude Dills McKee. He lived in Sylva until he graduated high school at the age of 15. Too young to enter college, he spent one year at Riverside Academy, thereafter entering the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduating from Chapel Hill with a degree in commerce, he earned his masters in business administration from Harvard Business School at age 21.
Before returning to North Carolina, he joined the Halsey Stewart Investment Firm in New York as a bond trader at their Wall Street headquarters. He returned to North Carolina where he worked for Southern Bell before taking over the family's hotel operation, High Hampton Inn in Cashiers.
Active in the community of Western North Carolina, he was a trustee of the Cherokee Historical Society for more than 20 years and was instrumental in the Cherokee Historical Museum. He served as trustee and officer of the Highlands Biological Association, as well as chairman of the Jackson County Morehead Scholarship Foundation for 25 years.
He was a member of the Biltmore Forest Country Club, a former member of the Pen and Plate Club, the Zeb Vance Debating Society, and many other clubs in the area.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, E. Lyndon McKee and Harold McKee.
Surviving are one son, William Dills McKee Jr.; one stepson, Robert C. Webster III; one stepdaughter, Lisa Thomen; and two grandchildren.

Naomi Ashley
Naomi West Ashley, 97, of the Brian Center, Brevard, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Johnny Norris officiated. Burial was held in Tuckasegee Baptist Church Cemetery.
A native of Jackson County, she lived most of her life in Buncombe County, living the last five years in Brevard. Daughter of the late William J. and Auie Slatton West, she retired from Perkinson Dress Shop in Asheville as a bookkeeper.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Raymond Johnson and William J. Ashley.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Lillian Hahlbeck
Lillian Buchanan Hahlbeck, 72, of Monteith Branch Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at her residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Rich Peoples officiated. Burial was in Bumgarner Cemetery. Pallbearers were Randall Turpin, Keith Monteith, Carl Buchanan Jr., Chris Buchanan, Mark Buchanan and David Buchanan. The family will receive friends tonight (Thursday) at the funeral home.
A native of Jackson County, she graduated in 1950 from Sylva High School. She moved to Washington, D.C., when she was 18 and moved back to Jackson County five years ago. Daughter of the late Cashius and Alene Harris Buchanan, she was an air transport associate and a member of the Presbyterian Church in Washington.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Glenna Hahlbeck.
Surviving are three sisters, Lucille Turpin of Sylva, Katie Stone of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mildred B. Monteith of Dillsboro and two brothers, Jimmy Buchanan and Carl Buchanan, both of Whittier.

Allan Lillard
Allan C. Lillard, 80, of Cagle Branch Road, Sylva, died Sunday, May 2, 2004, in Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home. The Revs. Charles Carnes and Avery Brown officiated. Burial was in Franklin Cemetery.
A native of Pennsylvania, he lived most of his life in Jackson County. Son of the late Sherman and Dora Crowe Lillard, he was a truck driver.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Lillard; five brothers; and one sister.
Surviving are three sisters, Elizabeth Potts of Ohio, Rowena Tolley of Cherokee and Alice DeHart of Sylva; and one brother, Sam Robinson of Sylva.
Marian Hall
Marian Deitz Hall, 61, of Waynesville, died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at Calvary Road Baptist Church in Waynesville. The Revs. J.D. Grant and Chad Chandler officiated.
Following her graduation from Western Carolina University in 1964, she taught in the Transylvania County School System for seven years before returning to Jackson County, where she taught for 23 years before retiring. Daughter of the late James Early and Gladys Herring Deitz, she was a native of Jackson County.
She was a member of Calvary Road Baptist Church since 1996 and was a member of the choir, participated in Bible studies, prepared the church bulletin boards and worked with the AWANA program.
Surviving are her husband, Harold Hall Jr. of Waynes–ville; one daughter, Marcie Danielle Sluder of Sylva; three stepchildren, Wendi Hall and Michael Hall of Tuckasegee and Tracy Anderson of Hayesville; one sister, Eunice Deitz Nicholson of Sylva; one brother, James M. Deitz of Waynesville; and four grandchildren.

Dorothy Tooni
Dorothy Tooni, 70, of Wright's Creek community, Cherokee, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at her residence.

Robert DuVall
Robert Emerson DuVall, 81, of Westminster, Md., died Friday, April, 23, 2004, at the Carroll Hospital Center.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 27, at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, Westmin–ster. Burial was in Meadow Branch Cemetery.
Born in Carroll County, Md., July 12, 1922, he was the son of the late G. Wilmer and Mercedes Brown DuVall.
He was the owner of Mobile Welding Service, which he founded in 1948. He was the 11th state-certified welder in Maryland. He was a 1939 graduate of Westminster High School. During World War II, he served with the 3rd Marines, 4th Air Wing in the Marshall Islands, Guam and Pelilu.
He was the Maryland State Trapshooting Handicap Champion in 1966. He was a member of Westminster United Methodist Church, VFW Post 467 and a life member of North Carroll and Carroll County Gun Clubs. He was a past Chief of Westminster Fire Department.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Leona Hammett DuVall: one daughter, Donna Shaeffer of Westminster, one son, Robert Emerson DuVall II and wife Patsi Williamson DuVall (formerly of Sylva) of Atlanta; one sister, Donna DuVall Sellman of West–minster; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
