Daniel Frady
Daniel W. Frady, 88, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., died November 25, 2003.
A committal service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 10, at the Western North Carolina Veterans Cemetery, 1270 Old U.S. Highway 70, Black Mountain. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the Frady Suite, Doubletree Hotel Asheville/Biltmore, 115 Hendersonville Rd., Asheville.
He was born in Rockwood, Tenn., and his parents moved to Sylva when he was 6 months old. He was raised in Sylva and played athletics throughout his high school years.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1937-40 and was recalled in 1942 after the Pearl Harbor attack. He served as a lieutenant through the end of World War II and was discharged in 1945. He served in the Army Reserves and National Guard.
He founded and was the Company Commander of the National Guard unit in Hendersonville for a number of years, retiring as captain.
A North Carolina Highway Patrolman, he began his service in Asheville in 1946, then transferred to Hendersonville where he served for 18 years. He also served in Raleigh, Asheboro and Marion. He retired from the Highway Patrol after serving more than 27 years and moved to Florida.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Bernadine; one son, Daniel of Gallup, N.M.; two sisters, Lou Dermid of Captiva, Fla. and Geneva Thompson of Cherokee; one grandson; two great grandchildren.
Josephine Zimmer
Josephine M. Zimmer 76, of Sylva died Monday, April 26, 2004 in an Asheville hospital following a period of declining health.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in Sylva First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paul Christy will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service.
She was born in England and was a member of the Royal Air Force. She was a member of the Women's Institute in England for 10 years and also the Lifeboat Charity organization for 10 years in England.
She was a member of the ladies of the Moose in Florida for two years and the Red Hat Society for one year. Daughter of the late Charles and Adelaide Mabel Browning Way, she attended Sylva First United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by one brother, John G. Way.
Surviving are her husband, Edward Zimmer; two sons John Prosser of Portland Ore., and Anthony Prosser of Bristol, England; one daughter, Ann Scott of Bath, England; one sister, Margaret Collier of Crediton Devon, England; and six grandchildren.

Ralph Owl
Ralph Owl, 89, of Jerome Bradley Road, Cherokee, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at University of Tennessee Knoxville Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral service were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 28, at Cherokee Baptist Church, of which he was a member and Sunday school teacher. The Revs. Merritt Youngdeer and Heber Peacock officiated. Burial was in Birdtown Cemetery with military rites provided by Steve Youngdeer Post 143, of which he was a member.
A native of Swain County, he lived most of his life in Jackson County. He was a son of the late Mark and Belva Smith Owl, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a 1937 graduate of Cherokee Boarding School. He retired from the forestry department of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He was an entrepreneur and businessman.
Surviving are his wife of 19 years, Mianna Feather Owl; one daughter, Lola Russell of Lenoir City, Tenn.; two sisters, Emaline Lambert and Rosie Marlar, both of Cherokee; two brothers, Raymond Owl of Cherokee and Clifford "Jake" Owl of Murphy; and three grandchildren.

Nathaniel Banks
Nathaniel Banks, 77, of Old Settlement Road, Sylva, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at his residence after an extended illness.
Funeral service were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Larry Robinson, Pervie Stines and Robbin Taylor officiated. Military rites were conducted by Sylva American Legion Post 104. A private burial was held Monday, April 26, at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Rick Wood, Ray Farmer, Steve McDonald, Dewey Buchanan, Kevin Bradley and Dean Turpin.
A native of Swain County, he lived in Jackson County for the past 33 years. He retired from WCU Heating, Ventilation and Air Conduction Department after 22 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He attended Sylva Church of God and was the son of the late Ambrose and Edna Woods Banks.
He was preceded in death by an aunt and uncle who raised him, Rosa and Lee Childers.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Turpin Banks; one daughter, Linda Marquez of Texas; five sons, Jackie Banks of Sylva, Lester Greene and Phillip "Duke" Greene, both of Whittier, Mike Greene of Hazelwood and Russell Banks of Texas; and five grandchildren.

Lillian Hahlbeck
Lillian Buchanan Hahlbeck, 72, of Monteith Branch Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at her residence.

Norman West
Norman E. West, 66, of Cherokee's Big Cove community died Friday, April 23, 2004.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at Straight Fork Baptist Church. The Revs. Dan Conseen, Mitchell Smiley, Tom Cochran, James "Bo" Parris, Tom Harris and Ray Kinsland officiated. Burial was in Armachain Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were Davis, Jesse, Joe, Charlie, Abraham, Tommy and Mickey Welch.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Alfred, Cecil and Jim West; and two sisters, Gladys Parris and Edna Hatton.
Son of the late Buck and Susie Sequoyah West, he was a Baptist missionary with BIMI for 22 years to the North American Indians. He preached in Canada, Alaska and Mexico.
He was a former council member and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was former pastor of Straight Fork Baptist Church, an interim pastor at Echota Baptist Church and a member of Concord Baptist Church in Fairmont, Ga.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Emily West; two daughters, Norma Craig and Donna Welch, both of Cherokee; three brothers, Frank and Don West of Cherokee and Bucky West of Balsam; two sisters, Doris Catt of Cherokee and Eloise James of Markleeville, Calif.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Conkle
Dorothy Whitaker Conkle, 86, of Cashiers, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004, at Deerfield Retirement Center in Asheville.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Church of the Good Shepherd in Cashiers.
A native of Short Hills, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Gladys Whitaker Smith and Melbourne Smith. She graduated from Kent Place School in Summit, N.J., and the Child Education Foundation in New York City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Conkle. They owned and operated the Carolina Mountain Shop for 50 years.
Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Conkle Swann of Asheville; one son, John Conkle of San Diego; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

James Woodard
James Clyde Woodard, 72, of U.S. 441 South, Sylva, died Friday, April 23, 2004, in Skyland Care Center after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 25, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Dan Stiles, Charles Jackson and Steve Webb officiated. Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Air Force and Sylva American Legion Post 104.
A native of Jackson County, he spent 30 years in Seneca, S.C., before moving to Jackson County five years ago. He was a retired mechanic with Kendall Co., a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in the Korean War, a member of Trinity Baptist Church and son of the late Manuel and Bertie Johnson Woodard.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Glenn Woodard.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Peggy Sue Deitz Woodard; one daughter, Kathy Lynn Woodard of Pendleton, S.C.; one son, James Russell Woodard of Rock Hill, S.C.; three sisters, Melita Burnette of Winston Salem, Juanita Cope and Minnie Lee Buchanan, both of Sylva; two brothers, Grover Woodard of Seneca, and Monroe Woodard of Sylva; and four grandchildren.

Marie Watson
Marie Cook McClure Watson, 79, of Racking Cove Road, Sylva, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 26, in the chapel of Moody Funeral Home. The Revs. Earl Holden and Robert Blanton officiated. Burial was at Norman Blanton Cemetery in the Ochre Hill community.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Jackson County and daughter of the late James Thomas "Tom" and Carlettie Cope Cook.
She was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Samie Lee McClure; second husband, Curtis Watson; one brother, James Marcus Cooke; and one grandchild.
Surviving are one son, Gene McClure of Sylva; one daughter, Judy Sutton of Hendersonville; one brother, Claude Cook; three stepdaughters; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

Emma Moss
Emma Lou Moss, 98, of Greensboro died Saturday, April 24, 2004.
The second of 10 children born to David P. and Sallie Nicholson Moss, she was raised in Jackson County. She graduated from Sylva Collegiate Institute and received her two-year teaching certification from Western Carolina University.
She embarked on a 45-year elementary school teaching career with two years in Webster, 15 years in Pleasant Garden, 19 years in Winston-Salem, and nine years in Charlotte.
While teaching she completed a bachelor degree at Duke University and a master's degree at Peabody College in Tennessee. After mandatory retirement in 1970, she divided her time between her home in Charlotte and caring for her parents in their home in Barnardsville.
In 1981 she moved to Greensboro and entered the Presbyterian Home in High Point in 1996. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Greensboro. In 1998, at age 93, she completed a book, The Best Within, which chronicled her family experiences growing up in Western North Carolina.
Surviving are two sisters, Janie Ardrey and Cornelia Murray, both of Charlotte; and one brother, Jim Moss of Phoenix, Ariz.
