20th river cleanup set for this Saturday - There's still time to sign up for Western Carolina University's 20th annual Tuckaseigee River cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, April 17. Western's Base Camp Cullowhee is currently accepting volunteers to help remove everything from aluminum cans and milk jugs to old tires and abandoned appliances from a section of the river. Saturday seminar to focus on crystal meth - Using the concept that "It takes a village to raise a child," Jackson County Sheriff Jimmy Ashe will sponsor a Drug Awareness Seminar Saturday, April 17, from 2-5 p.m. in Southwestern Community College's Myers Auditorium. Disbarred Sylva attorney pleads guilty to embezzlement, money laundering - A disbarred Sylva attorney pleaded guilty last week to 20 federal charges involving money laundering and embezzlement. Tom Jones, 60, a former attorney for Jackson County, former member of the county Board of Elections and former president of the Jackson County Bar Association, entered his plea April 7 before a magistrate judge in Charlotte, said Suellen Pierce, public information officer with the U.S. Attorney's Western District office. Earth Day at WCU to include alternative cars - An alternative-powered car show will shift festivities into high gear during Western Carolina University's Earth Day celebration Thursday, April 22. Smoky Mountain High School's electric-powered pickup truck will take center stage, along with two electric vehicles built by Swain County High School students.
