Getting 'RED-y' for Greening Up

For his Eagle Scout project, Dana Thorne of Sylva, center, a member of Boy Scout Troop 999, enlisted volunteers to help him clean, scrap and paint 26 downtown fire hydrants. "We also took the caps off the hydrants, cleaned out the threads and greased them," said Thorne, a senior at Smoky Mountain High School. Thorne secured permission from Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority and the Sylva Volunteer Fire Department for his project. The fire department recommended changing the hydrants from yellow to red and Thorne and his volunteers, including Kaitlyn Stehling, left, and his mother, Lucy Thorne, right, plan to have them finished in time for Sylva's Greening Up the Mountains Festival April 25. - Herald photo by Rose Hooper
