20th river cleanup set for this Saturday
There's still time to sign up for Western Carolina University's 20th annual Tuckaseigee River cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, April 17.
Western's Base Camp Cullowhee is currently accepting volunteers to help remove everything from aluminum cans and milk jugs to old tires and abandoned appliances from a section of the river.
The cleanup day will be an opportunity for people from WCU and surrounding communities to remove trash in and along the banks of the river through Jackson County, from East LaPorte to Barker's Creek Bridge.
"It is a great way to get involved in a volunteer project and have a great time while you are at it," said Leigh Jackson, WCU's assistant director of outdoor programs.
Volunteers will have the option of working from a raft or from the riverbank. Transportation and equipment including rafts, life jackets, paddles and trash bags will be provided. Participants should wear old clothing and bring gloves to protect their hands.
Everyone who volunteers will be invited to a free cookout and receive a commemorative T-shirt. Drawings will be held for a variety of prizes, including a mountain bike donated by area merchants, and a $100 cash prize to the largest organized group.
Major sponsors include Duke Power, Last Minute Productions, The Large Boys, Nantahala Outdoor Center and Great Smoky Mountain Railroad.
Other sponsors include Aramark; Dillsboro River Company; Endless River Adventures; Jackson County Rescue Squad; Jackson County Travel and Tourism Authority; Jackson Paper Manufacturing; Melrose, Seago and Lay, P.A.; Motion Makers; Simply T's; The Sylva Herald; Tuckaseegee Outfitters; and Wildwater Rafting LTD.
Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Forms are available online at www.wcu.edu/univcenter/outdoors and can be submitted via fax at 227-7250 or dropped off in person on the first floor of the University Center. On-site registration will be at 11 a.m. the day of the cleanup on the center's lawn.
