Top-ranked Roberson tops Smoky Mountain

Roberson, the state's top-ranked 3-A baseball team, picked up a 9-1 Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Smoky Mountain on April 30 at Roberson.

"I thought we did a decent job playing them," Coach Ron Yount said. "Tyson (Crawford) had a good pitching outing."

The Rams scored all the runs they needed in the first when Tyler Radford homered with two men on base.

Justin Talbot's two-run double made it 5-0 in the third.

The Mustangs (1-9, 0-7) got on the board in the fourth as Stephen Karby singled and advanced on a couple of errors.

RBI singles by Cameron Maybin in the fourth and Jason Gordon in the fifth upped the margin to 7-1.
Roberson's final two runs came in the sixth without a hit.

Maybin, Radford and Blair Wells all had two hits for the Rams.

Seth Laughter pitched the first four innings for the win.

Crawford (0-2) took the loss.

"We're playing much better than we did last year," Yount said. "We're getting good pitching efforts, and we're hitting the ball much better. I'm looking for things to go our way in the second half."

Last Thursday's game at Enka was postponed due to wet grounds and has not been rescheduled. This Friday's game at Murphy has also been called off and may be played at a later date.

While the Roberson game was the only one for the varsity in the past week, the JVs (7-5) were busy with four home games.

Roberson's JVs rolled to a 17-2 victory. SM's Matthew Hawkins was two of two.

"We just didn't play well," Coach Aaron Tuttle said. "We gave up six runs in the first inning, and we had a lot of errors."

Enka rallied for a 7-6 JV win last Thursday despite two home runs and four RBIs from Daniel Buchanan.

"We played real well," Tuttle said. "We had a 6-5 lead going into the seventh and got beat twice on suicide squeezes. That's something we really haven't worked on all year. We hit the ball well, but they just executed at the end to win the ballgame."

The Mustangs swept a doubleheader from Swain on Saturday by scores of 8-3 and 11-4.

Dylan Brooks picked up the win in the opener as he struck out nine. Buchanan
and Zack Watson both had two hits.

Hawkins was the winning pitcher in the second game as he struck out seven. Kalin Haskett had two hits.

"We played real well as a team even though we had two starters out of town," Tuttle said. "We hit the ball well."
