Tuscola shuts out SM in conference action
Smoky Mountain had more hits but was unable to push anyone across the plate and dropped a 6-0 Mountain Athletic Conference baseball decision at Tuscola on March 17.
Mustang pitchers Steven Karby (0-1) and David White limited the Mountaineers to four hits, but three errors helped the Tuscola cause.
Meanwhile, SM had seven hits but failed to get the big hit to drive in any runs.
"We didn't execute defensively," Coach Ron Yount said. "We've got some things to work on, but we work on those things every day. We need to eliminate some of those problems that cause runs."
David Sherrill pitched the shutout.
The Mounties scored all the runs they needed in the first as Jonathan Crompton had an RBI single and eventually came home on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
Sherrill doubled in the second, and Brian Heath had an RBI single. Another run scored on an error extending the margin to 4-0.
Heath delivered another RBI single in the fourth and later scored on a wild pitch to account for the 6-0 final.
Heath had two hits in three at-bats.
SM's Ben Blakely had a perfect day at the plate by going three of three.
The Mustang JVs scored three times in the top of the seventh to break a tie and take a 9-6 win. Matthew Hawkins singled, Daniel Buchanan walked and two runs scored on an error. After a walk to Clay Cantler, J.R. Collins had an RBI single.
"We played well once again," Coach Aaron Tuttle said. "Our kids like to battle. We put the ball in play, and we keep improving every day on defense."
Grant Schallock pitched six innings for the win. He allowed two earned runs, three hits and a walk while striking out seven. Hawkins pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
Collins and Kalin Haskett were both two of two at the plate while Hawkins was two of three.
