IT'S BEEN ALMOST 25 YEARS since the Sylva-Webster Golden Eagle Marching Band won its second national championship. To mark this milestone, a reunion is scheduled for July 24. A Web site has been created for alumni, parents, and friends of the band. Visit www.GoldenEagleBand.com for information.

BENJAMIN FISHER, formerly of Sylva, has joined Troutman Sanders LLP in Raleigh as an associate in the firm's commercial development and real estate investments practice group. Fisher received his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2001 after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998. While in law school, Fisher received the CALI Award for Torts in 1999 and Trademarks in 2000. Fisher is the son of Ron and Lorraine Fisher of Sylva and is a graduate of Smoky Mountain High School. Troutman Sanders is one of the Southeast's largest law firms with more than 500 attorneys in offices in Atlanta, Raleigh, Washington, D.C., Virginia, London and Hong Kong.
WHITTIER'S SECOND ANNUAL GREEN THUMB DAY will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 17, along Main Street across from the Whittier Post Office. The rain date is Saturday, April 24. Swain High School agricultural students will sell bedding plants and hanging baskets. Decorative spring and general local crafts, plus a variety of yard sale items, will be for sale. Whittier United Methodist Church will hold a bake sale to raise funds for its local outreach programs. Live music will be provided by Pete Friedman. Light snacks will be available. Crafters, non-profits and others interested in reserving space may call Gloria Nolan, festival chairman, at 497-2393.
GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS RAILROAD'S steam locomotive No. 1702 is back in service in time for opening weekend, which will be Saturday, April 3. No. 1702 will depart Dillsboro at 1 p.m. for a round trip to Bryson City. Passengers riding during the opening weekend, as well as local merchants and residents coming to see the train off, will receive a commemorative American Heritage Railways logo lapel pin. Free hot dogs will be served on the deck, accompanied by live musical entertainment. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers both steam and diesel train excursions through Western North Carolina.
