Denman Lovin
James Denman Lovin, 90, of Fisherman's Lane, Sylva, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, after a brief illness at Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka, Fla.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 26, at Sylva First United Methodist Church, of which he has a member. The Revs. Paul Christy and Wayne Hill will officiate. Burial will be in Gunter Cemetery with Masonic rites conducted by Dillsboro Masonic Lodge.
A native of Swain County, he retired in 1975 as a draftsman with Union Carbide in Oak Ridge, Tenn., after 30 years of service. Son of the late James Tilman and Nora Tatham Lovin, he was a Mason. He was a seasonal resident of Palatka, for 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eunice "Blackie" Lovin; one daughter, Jean Cassil; two brothers; and four sisters.
Surviving his wife of 24 years, Joyce F. Lovin; one son, James Lovin of Memphis, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight (Thursday) at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home.

Evelyn Carter
Evelyn B. Carter, 72, of Monteith Branch Road, Sylva, died unexpectedly Sunday, March 21, 2004, at Mission Hospitals, Asheville.
A memorial service was held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Ron Allen officiated. A private burial will be held at a later date.
A native of Chatham County, she lived in Jackson County for the past 14 years. She retired from Kerns Baking as store manager. She was the daughter of the late Pearlie Waiters and Hannah Harrell Carter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Jones, who died in 1991; and four brothers.
Surviving are one daughter, Marcia Jones of Cullowhee; two sons, Cecil Gordon Jones Jr. of Oliver Branch, Miss., and Robert Wayne Jones of Kinston; two brothers, Carl Carter of Rocky Mount and Larry Carter of Louisburg; and four grandchildren.

Kenneth McDowell
The Rev. Kenneth Joe McDowell, 69, of Whittier and formerly of Hayesville, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, at New Hope Baptist Church. The Revs. Robert Taylor and Clifford Willis officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Kenneth Joe McDowell Jr., Danny Maney, Danny Taylor, Victor Namotka, Dennis McDowell and R.L. Taylor.
A native of Transylvania County, he had grown up in Clay County and had been living in Jackson County for the past 33 years. Son of the late James Emerson and Bessie Owens McDowell, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired bridge maintenance supervisor with the N.C. Department of Transportation. A member of New Hope Baptist Church, he pastored several churches in Jackson and Swain counties.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Maney McDowell; one daughter, Billie Jo Ashe of Whittier; two sons, Kenneth Joe "Mac" McDowell Jr. of Whittier and Danny Maney of Sylva; three sisters, Mattie Speed of Clayton, Ga., Thelma Womble of Farner, Tenn., and Faye Ballew of Ellijay, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Jane Nagy
Jane Chilton Adams Nagy, 83, formerly of Cullowhee, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, in a health care center in Sevierville, Tenn., after a period of declining health.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Father Mike Jones officiated. Sylva American Legion Post 104 conducted graveside rites.
A native of Memphis, Tenn., she graduated Memphis High School in 1938, Memphis State College with a bachelor of science degree in 1942, Auburn University with a bachelor of interior design in 1951 and Western Carolina University with a master of arts in education degree in 1965. She was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Phi Delta Kappa professional fraternity of education. She was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1943, commissioned lieutenant in 1949, commissioned a lieutenant commander in the Navy Reserve in 1963, and retired in 1980. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also a member of Cullowhee Garden Club and received certificates of appreciation from the Garden Club of North Carolina in 1983, 1984 and 1987. She was honored with a lifetime membership in the Garden Club of North Carolina. She illustrated several volumes of poetry with her pen and ink drawings, including Jackson County Poetry and books by Lillian Hirt. She was the daughter of the late Chilton and Maidee DeLoach Adams.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Geza Nagy.

Joe Connor
Joe Woodfin Connor, 78, of Sherrill Farm Road, Lincolnton, and formerly of Sylva, died unexpectedly Monday, March 15, 2004, at his daughter's home.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Terry Jenkins officiated. Burial was in Connor Cemetery with military rites conducted by Sylva American Legion Post 104.
He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. He went to live with his daughter, Kathy, in November 2003. He was a retired cook, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he received two Bronze Star Medals in the invasion of Italy, was a member of Wilkesdale Baptist Church and the son of the late Henry and Dovie Connor.
He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Joe Connor.
Surviving are two daughters, Diane Foster of Little River, S.C., and Kathy Willis of Lincolnton; son, Randy Connor of Garden City, S.C.; one sister, Geneva Walls of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
William Fields
William Howard "Mr. Bill" Fields, 76, of Glenville died Monday, March 22, 2004.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, March 26, at the Church of the Good Shepherd.
He served in World War II as an underwater demolition expert. A graduate of Wedner College with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering, he worked for General Electric Corp. as an electrical and design engineer on guided missile systems for the U.S. Navy. He retired from GE in 1996. He was a resident of Cashiers since 1977 during the summer and has been a full-time resident the past 10 years. He lived 25 years in Satellite Beach, Fla.
Surviving are his wife, Judith Fields; one son, William Curtis Fields; one daughter, Catherine Sedillia "Cat" Ota; one brother, Warren Fields; and one sister, Wilma Scroedl.

John Roper
John Harvey Roper, 89, of Whittier, formerly of Franklin, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at his home.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 21, at Burningtown Baptist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Jim Kinard officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Don Bell, Buddy Raby, Eddie Simonds, Cal Yonce, Cade Yonce and Nathaniel Darnell.
A native of Macon County, he was the son of the late James "Bud" Roper and Martha Swafford Roper. He was married to the late Mona Lee Edwards Roper, who died in 1984. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and retired from General Motors.
Surviving are two daughters, Martha Yonce of Franklin and Amy Darnell of Whittier; two sisters, Margie Roper and Mae Roper, both of Franklin; and four grandchildren.

Vergil Dyer
Vergil Ray Dyer, 75, of Waynesville, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at his residence.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 22, at the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The Revs. Don Letzring and Rich Peoples officiated. Burial was in Cogdill Henry Cemetery in Jackson County.
Son of the late James Bailey and Bertha Bell Cogdill Dyer, he was born Dec. 30, 1928, in Jackson County. He was a cook for 54 years in Jackson and Haywood county restaurants until retiring from Clyde's Restaurant in 1999. He was known for his special cooking recipes. He was a member of Sulphur Springs Free Will Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Darence and Bill Dyer; two sisters, Eva Belle and Eloise Dyer; and five infant sisters.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Jean Bryson Dyer; six sons, Robert Dyer of Sylva, Jim Dyer of Asheville, Kenneth Dyer and Jeff Dyer, both of Waynesville, David Dyer and Michael Dyer, both of Eaton, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
