Mustangs place fifth at North Buncombe

Smoky Mountain's men's track team finished third in a meet held March 16 at North Buncombe.

North won with 108 points to 67 for East Henderson, 57 for SM and 18 for Mountain Heritage.

"That's the most points we've scored in a meet in three years," Coach Tim Hawkins said. "Our boys were excellent. For the number of kids we had, our girls also did well."

David Kelly won the 100-meter dash with a regional qualifying time of 11.23. Cory Siler was second in 11.5.

Travis Brotherton took the 3,200-meter run in 10:57. He was second in the 1,600 run (4:52) and 800 run (2:14.27).

The 800-meter relay team of Siler, Kelly, Red Ashton and Cody Lewis won in 1:39. Also winning was the 400 relay team of T.J. Bradley, Alton Floyd, Siler and Kelly in 47.5.

Siler was second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.8.

Also second was the 3,200 relay team of Dayne Bowers, Brendan Ferguson, Trinity Blackburn and Sabastian Heinrich. The time was not available.

Joseph Stapleton was third in the shot put with a throw of 38-6.

Placing fourth and fifth in the 400 dash were James Foree and Red Ashton with times of 57.33 and 57.4, respectively.

On the women's side, SM's 800 relay team of Cetera DeGraffenreid, Louisa Madill, Sheena Kanott and Tina McDonald won in 2:01.5. The same squad was third in the 400 relay at 57.0.

DeGraffenreid was third in the 100 dash at 13.06 with Madill fifth at 13.5.

Brittany French was fourth in the 400 dash with a time of 1:14.2

North Buncombe took the women's meet with 112 points followed by East Henderson (96), Mountain Heritage (28) and SM (18).

The Mustangs and Lady Mustangs also took part in the Roberson relays last Thursday. Times and team scores were not available.

The 1,600 medley relay squad of Kelly, Siler, Ashton and Brotherton was sixth. The sprint medley team of Kelly, Floyd, Siler and Ashton placed fifth.

For the Lady Mustangs, the 400 relay team of DeGraffenreid, Sheena, Madill and McDonald came in sixth.

"We were real pleased with the way we ran," Hawkins said. "The kids got a chance to run against some of the best teams in the state."
