Lady Mustangs claim MAC win over Erwin
Chelsa Burrell scored two goals, and Kelli Brannigan had three assists Friday leading Smoky Mountain to a 6-1 Mountain Athletic Conference soccer victory over Erwin at Western Carolina.
"It was what we were looking for offensively," Coach Jeff Brannigan said. "We created plenty of opportunities. I felt we should have scored three or four more goals. The girls implemented what we had been working on in practice, including crossing the ball and getting their head on it."
The Lady Mustangs, who improved to 2-3 in the MAC, had a 22-8 advantage in shots. Amy Haggard made her first start in goal and had five saves.
Danielle Bowers, the regular goalie, saw action in the field and played well, according to the coach.
SM built a 3-0 halftime lead. Burrell opened the scoring five minutes into the game with a double assist from Kelli Brannigan and Tara Maloy.
Jordan Yomans scored at the 17-minute mark with an assist from Jenna Carpenter, and Carrilea Potter had the third goal at the 25-minute mark off Yomans' assist.
The Lady Warriors' lone goal was a penalty kick by Heather Martin 10 minutes into the second half after a foul in the box.
Brannigan assisted on goals by Burrell at the 58-minute mark and Chelsea Parham at the 69-minute mark for a 5-1 advantage.
Maloy had the final goal at the 72-minute mark with an assist by Jordan Masson.
The coach singled out Burrell, Potter and Maloy for their effort up front and said the midfielders, including Brannigan and Masson, played well.
"Our defense, for the most part, was outstanding," he said.
