Errors are costly for SM in loss to Swain

Smoky Mountain committed 10 errors Monday as the Mustangs remained winless in seven baseball games with a 10-8 loss to Swain at Western Carolina.

"I started three sophomores," Coach Ron Yount said. "We had fly balls that dropped. Occasionally a senior or junior will commit an error."

The Mustangs provided enough offense to win as they had 11 hits to four by the Maroon Devils.

"We hit the ball well," Yount said. "We just gave it back to them when we started throwing the ball away."

One of the sophomores who started was Brandon Magruder (0-1), who pitched very well and limited Swain to four hits.

"Brandon pitched a fantastic game," Yount said. "That was just his second time pitching this year."

The tone for the night was set in the first inning when three errors allowed Swain to score twice.

The Mustangs tied it in the bottom of the first when Stephen Karby belted a home run over the recently installed 25-foot high fence in left field. The blow scored David White, who had doubled.

Cory Sutton's single was the lone hit in the Swain third. Three errors helped the Devils score three times for a 5-2 advantage.

Karby singled and scored on Nathan Medlin's base hit in the bottom of the third cutting the gap to 5-3.

Sutton singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the fifth for a 6-3 Swain lead.

SM moved in front 8-6 with a five-run fifth. Following an error, Karby had an RBI single, stole second and scored on Zack West's single. Magruder singled, and Medlin tripled to drive in two runs then scored on a wild pitch.

The lead didn't last long. Kyle Fronrath had an RBI double in the Swain sixth, and Cody White tied it with a sacrifice fly. Two errors allowed the final two runs to score.

Fronrath was the winning pitcher in relief although he gave up the five runs in the fifth. Jason Jordan pitched two scoreless innings for the save.

Fronrath and Sutton both had two hits for the Devils.

Karby had a perfect day at the plate as he was three of three with a walk. Medlin and West added two hits apiece.
