Citadel keeps Western Carolina winless in Southern Conference

Western Carolina's early-season Southern Conference woes continued as the Catamounts (9-13, 0-6) were swept in a three-game league series for the second straight weekend by a team from Charleston, S.C.

This time it was homestanding Citadel after College of Charleston roared through the Cats in Cullowhee a week earlier.

The Bulldogs scored five times in the bottom of the sixth in Sunday's series finale to rally for a 6-3 win. Jon Aughey, Zach Brown and Matt Matulia all had RBI singles, and Will Coker added a two-run double.

Citadel scored the game's first run in the second on Brown's home run.

Jared Greenwood's two-run homer in the fourth gave the Cats their first lead of the series at 2-1.

Chad McKown's RBI single made it 3-1 in the sixth, but Brad Josey (1-2) was unable to hold the lead.

Citadel's Chip Cannon went the distance for the win. He allowed eight hits and four walks while striking out four.

Brown had three hits for the Bulldogs while Josh Stackley extended his hitting streak to 20 games with two hits.

Greenwood paced the Cats by going three of four.

Stackley's three-run homer in the fifth powered the Bulldogs to a 6-3 victory Saturday. The blow gave Citadel a 4-1 advantage.

Matt Covington's sacrifice fly made it 5-1 in the sixth.

An RBI single by Chris Davis and Denver Edick's run-scoring double cut the gap to 5-3 in the seventh.

Chris Ard had an RBI single to account for the final run in the eighth.

The Bulldogs scored the game's first run in the opening inning on Justin Altman fielder's choice with the bases loaded.

The Cats tied it in the fifth on McKown's homer.

Bulldog starter Ken Egelton pitched 6.2 innings for the win. He allowed nine hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Eryk McConnell (2-2) took the loss in relief as he was touched up for four runs in just one inning.

Stackley went three of five while Ard and Coker both had two hits.

Edick paced the Cats with three hits. Davis, McKown and Mike McGowan all had two hits.

Jonathan Ellis pitched a four-hitter, and Stackley belted a three-run homer lifting the Bulldogs to a 4-0 victory Friday.

Citadel scored a run in the first on Chip Cannon's RBI single, and Stackley homered in the third to account for all the scoring.

Ellis struck out nine and walked two.

Caleb McConnell (0-1) went the distance for the Cats and took the loss. He got stronger as the game went along and retired the last 15 batters he faced.

Citadel's Chip Cannon and WCU's Todd Roper led their teams with two hits apiece.

Western was scheduled to play at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Tennessee Tech. Results were not known at Herald press time.

The Cats will go for their first conference win in a three-game home series with Davidson. Games are set for 7 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Western will go to Georgia State for 4 p.m. games next Tuesday and Wednesday.
