Cetera DeGraffenreid chosen player of year in conference

Smoky Mountain freshman sensation Cetera DeGraffenreid has been named women's basketball player of the year in the Mountain Athletic Conference.

Voting was by league coaches. DeGraffenreid beat out three junior stars from state 3-A champion Asheville, including North Carolina commitment Rashanda McCants, for the honor.

DeGraffenreid served notice from the opening game that she would be something special. In her first contest, she set a school record with 45 points and matched that total later in the year.

Smoky Mountain representatives on All-Mountain Athletic Conference teams for winter sports include, from left: Cetera DeGraffenreid, women's basketball player of the year; Hazel Brewin and Carrilea Potter, women's swimming; Danielle Bowers, women's basketball; Allie Lewis, women's swimmer of the year; Megan Owens, women's swimming, Nick Cox, men's co-swimmer of the year; and Brendan Ferguson, wrestling; (not pictured) Ollin Dunford, men's basketball.

DeGraffenreid went on to score a school record 684 points for an average of 24.4.

She also set a season record for steals, but the official total was unavailable at press time.

SM dominated winter sports awards. It was earlier announced that senior Allie Lewis was chosen women's swimmer of the year and junior Nick Cox was selected co-swimmer of the year for the men.

Lewis won the state 3-A championship in the 100 butterfly.

Joining DeGraffenreid on the all-conference squad is senior teammate Danielle Bowers. She averaged 11.2 points and also averaged double figures in rebounds.

Junior Leslie Mathis received honorable mention.

Senior Ollin Dunford was the lone SM representative on the All-MAC men's team. He led the Mustangs in points (17.0) rebounds (6.8), steals (3.2) and assists (3.1).

Joining Lewis and Cox as all-conference swimmers are juniors Carrilea Potter and Hazel Brewin and sophomore Megan Owens. Potter and Brewin along with Lewis and Owens were on a winning relay team at the MAC meet. Owens and Cox both had fifth-place finishes at the state meet after winning conference events.

Junior Brendan Ferguson was selected all-conference for wrestling. He competed in the state meet after placing fourth in the regionals.

Rounding out the women's all-conference basketball team are:

Whitney Penland, Franklin; Jessie Bryant, Tuscola, Maralee Peek, East Henderson, Brittany Allen and Brooke Allen, North Buncombe; McCants, Danielle Burgin and Lauren Powell, Asheville; Rachelle Hankins, Roberson; and Kellyn Gaddy, Enka.
