Cats defeat Gardner-Webb

Western Carolina pounded out 11 hits, including eight extra base knocks and three home runs, en route to an 11-2 non-conference victory at Gardner-Webb on March 16.

WCU's Todd Roper led off the game with a single and scored on a double by Denver Edick for a 1-0 lead.

Brian Sigmon tripled in the second and scored on Brandon Zollman's fielder's choice making it 2-0.

Chris Davis started the third with a home run, and Sigmon had a two-run shot. Matt Nelson's RBI triple left the Catamounts on top 6-0.

They added three unearned runs in the fourth to go up 9-0. Edick drove in a run with a ground out, and Jared Greenwood homered with a man on base.

An error allowed the Bulldogs to score their first run in the sixth.

Western scored its last two runs in the seventh as Mike McGowan singled home a pair.

G-W's Billy McCarson completed the scoring with a home run in the ninth.

Brad Josey (1-1) worked the first five innings for the win. He allowed three hits and a walk and struck out three.

Bulldog starter Josh Martin took the loss.

Davis had three hits in five at-bats while Sigmon and Nelson both had two hits.
