Burnette fires one-hitter as Erwin tops Lady Mustangs

Sarah Burnette pitched a one-hitter and struck out 13 as Erwin blanked Smoky Mountain 6-0 in Mountain Athletic Conference softball action Friday at Webster.

"We hadn't seen anything like Burnette this year," Coach Mark Taylor said. "We just couldn't catch up with her. Kayla (Duvall) matched her with strikeouts, but when they hit the ball it went through."

Duvall finished with 14 strikeouts, and both pitchers walked just one.

The Lady Warriors scored the first run in the third on Crystal McHone's triple and a wild pitch.

They made it 3-0 in the fifth on Kelly Ball's RBI double and Kady Grogan's run-scoring single.

Courtney Davis doubled to start a two-run sixth for Erwin, and the final run scored on a pair of errors in the seventh.

Grogan had two of Erwin's seven hits.

The lone SM hit was Julie Cagle's single in the fourth.

Playing at Erwin, the SM JVs dropped a 12-2 decision.
