Photos wanted for annual contest
(scroll down for rules & entry form)

By Lynn Hotaling

Delicate flowers, budding trees, children and pets in the yard for the first time in months... The Sylva Herald wants to see your vision of spring.

Readers are invited to submit photos in the paper's seventh annual "Mountain Spring" photography contest. Some of the best photos – including those chosen first-, second- and third-place winners – will be displayed during Sylva's "Greening Up the Mountains" festival Saturday, April 24. Winners will also be prominently displayed in the newspaper in the coming months.

The Sylva Herald is looking for your images of spring, like this shot by award-winning Herald photographer Nick Breedlove, for its seventh annual photo contest. Contest winners will be announced during the Greening Up the Mountains festival in downtown Sylva, which is set for Saturday, April 24. Deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Thursday, April 8.

Photographs submitted should be in color and must be taken by the entrant. Photos may have been taken at any time, not necessarily this spring. Participants may enter up to two photos for consideration.

Photos should be at least 5 by 7 inches and should be unmounted and unframed. They may not be computer enhanced. Entry blanks must be taped to the back of each picture.

The photos should reflect the theme, "Mountain Spring," and should be outdoor scenes displaying the beauty and renewal of spring. Preference will be given to photos taken in the Appalachian and Western North Carolina regions.

"Greening Up the Mountains" is a downtown street festival sponsored by Sylva Partners in Renewal. The event will bring together the efforts of several local groups, including Catch the Spirit of Appalachia.

Festival-goers will have the opportunity to watch traditional craft demonstrations, enter the heritage food competition and hear a variety of music. Food and craft vendors will also be on hand.

Those who would like more information about booth space during the festival should call SPIR at 586-1577.

The deadline for entering The Sylva Herald's "Mountain Spring" photo contest is Thursday, April 8, at 5 p.m. For a complete list of contest rules and an application form, stop by our Main Street office; or visit the newspaper's Web site at www.thesylvaherald.com.
