Obituary Information

The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.

When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.

We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.

Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.

To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Charlie Parker

Charlie H. Parker, 95, of Herford Drive, Tuckasegee, died Sunday, March 7, 2004, in Mountain Trace Nursing Center after an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, in Wolf Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member and deacon. The Revs. Don Riddle and Claude Nicholson officiated. Burial was in Woods Cemetery.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was a retired farmer and construction worker. He was a son of the late John Grant and Joyce Woods Parker.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Rigdon Parker, who died in 1974; four brothers, Oscar, Earl, Jim and Dewey Parker; three sisters, Frances Nicholson, Pearl Mashburn and Nellie Shipman; one son, James Carroll Parker and one grandson.

Surviving are two daughters, Marvetta McCall and Marilyn Ashe, both of Tuckasegee; one son, Jimmy Parker of Bend, Ore.; two sisters, Gladys Parker and Zephia Galloway, both of Cullowhee; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Joe Walkingstick

Joe Mike Walkingstick, 67, of Cherokee"s Birdtown community, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Johnson City (Tenn.) Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the home of Tom and Ethel Smith. The Revs. Jim "Bo" Sneed and Arthur Locust officiated. Burial was in Walkingstick Cemetery in Big Cove community.

A native of Swain County, he was a self-employed certified electrician. He was a son of the late Mason and Lucy Bird Walkingstick.

He was preceded in death by six brothers and one grandson.

Surviving are three daughters, Rose Mary Walkingstick, Katherine Long and Sharron Brown, all of Cherokee; two sons, Norman Walkingstick and Calvin Edward "Little Ed" Walkingstick, both of Cherokee; two sisters, Ethel M. Smith and Mary Jane Walkingstick, both of Cherokee; and 11 grandchildren.

Melton-Riddle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.


Mary Martin

Mary Yates Martin, 57, of Cherokee, died Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at Bethebara Baptist Church. The Rev. Mitchell Smiley officiated. Burial was in Martin Family Cemetery.

She was a daughter of the late Tam B. and Mildren H. Yates.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Tommy Yates; and one sister, Sadie Townsend.

Surviving are one son, George Martin of Cherokee; one daughter, Jessica T. Taylor of Cherokee; five sisters, Nina Cannon, Delores Ellis and Shirley Hobgood, all of Hickory, Ruth Karriker of Tennessee and Brenda Karriker of Troutman; three brothers, Dean Yates and Joe Yates of Hickory and James Yates of Taylorsville; and four grandchildren.

Crisp Funeral Home, Bryson City, was in charge of arrangements.


C.D. Davis

Cleaveland Dexter "C.D." Davis Sr., 61, of Macktown Road, Sylva, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a period of declining health.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 5, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Mike Moore and David Hoyle officiated.

He was a native of Jackson County, where he lived most of his life. Son of the late Dean and Sarah Lee Allen Davis, he was a retired construction worker.

He was preceded in death by one grandson.

Surviving are one daughter, Patsy Davis Conner of Cullowhee; two sons, Cleaveland Davis Jr. of Dillsboro and Scotty Dexter Davis of Cullowhee; two sisters, Annie Davis Burgess of Sylva and Brenda Lee Davis Owen of Tuckasegee; two brothers, Jackie A. Davis of Canton and Dale Davis of Dillsboro; and three grandchildren.

Creighton Casey

Creighton OlufeŽ Casey, 30, of Greenville, died Saturday, March 6, 2004, at Pitt Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at God's Holy Tabernacle Church in Sylva.
He was born in Sylva and lived most of his life here. He graduated from Smoky Mountain High School and attended Southwestern Community College, Western Carolina University and East Carolina University.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Estus and DeRosette Casey.
Surviving are his mother, Victoria Casey McDonald of Sylva; and one sister, Tina McDonald of Sylva.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sickle Cell Foundation.
