Bank robbery suspects apprehended in Georgia - Two people suspected of robbing a bank in Sylva last week were arrested some 12 hours later near Valdosta, Ga. 'Sylva Streak' dies in Asheville at age 46 -
The man generally considered the greatest athlete ever produced in Jackson County has died. Jimmy Streater, 46, passed away Friday at Blue Ridge Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Asheville. Streater was a four-sport athlete at Sylva-Webster High, where he graduated in 1976. He was a Parade All-American in football and earned a scholarship to the University of Tennessee. He played on state championship teams in football and baseball for the Golden Eagles and a district championship....

State officials veto library referendum - Come November, Jackson County residents won't cast votes on the library issue. The N.C. Board of Elections has denied a request from the county to hold an advisory referendum that would have given voters the chance to choose between a downtown Sylva site and Southwestern Community College as the location for a new public library. Officials make Nations superintendent - After watching her lead local schools for the past three months, county education officials acted Monday (Feb. 23) to remove the "acting" from Sue Nations' title. Members of the Jackson County Board of Education voted unanimously to offer the veteran educator, who has spent her entire career with Jackson County Schools, a four-year contract as superintendent. "We're very pleased that Sue has accepted the job," said James Roper, school board chairman. "The board as a whole feels Sue will do a good job for our school system." Board members chose....


Funds for Cashiers day care to come from EDC - County officials moved Feb. 17 to finalize funding aimed at stabilizing a day care center in Cashiers, agreeing that money for the center would come from economic development funds. At the request of Sheila Hoyle, director of the Southwestern Child Development Commission, Jackson County commissioners approved the allocation of some $35,000 to the child care center during their Jan. 22 meeting but did not designate a source for the funding.
