Obituary Information
The Sylva Herald prints obituaries free of charge as a service to its readers.
When possible, obituaries should be submitted to The Herald from the funeral home in charge of arrangements. Information received will be printed in our standard obituary format. As is the case with all information submitted to The Herald, we reserve the right to edit obituary information to fit our standard format.
We publish names of the deceased's children; we also include the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We do not include in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews or special friends.
Included in a brief history of the deceased is items such as their employment, professional, civic, community and religious affiliations. We omit personal tributes.
To publish a more detailed obituary or one in another format, the announcement can run as a paid advertisement.

Hester Wilson
Hester Bryson Wilson, 83, of North River Road, Sylva, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Mountain View Manor Nursing Center after a period of declining health.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, at Melton-Riddle Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Eddie Stillwell and Randy Drinnon officiated. Burial was in Webster Cemetery. Pallbearers were Stacy Tuck, Travis Fox, Chris Dillard, Junior Wilson, Woodrow Wilson and Steve Wilson.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a gardener and member of Old Savannah Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Burton and Joanna Clark Bryson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson, who died in 1973, a twin sister, Ester Gunter; three other sisters, Elsie Webb, Elda Williams and Lessie Cowan; one daughter, Betty Ingram; one son, Larry Wilson; one brother, Roy Bryson; and one great-grandchild.
Surviving are one son, Bobby Wilson of Franklin; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Chiltoskie Swayney
Chiltoskie Woodfin Swayney, 60, of Cherokee, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Cherokee Indian Hospital.
A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, at Big Cove Pentecostal Holiness Church. The Rev. Ben Tapp officiated.
A native of Cherokee, he was the son of Chiltoskie and Minnie McCall Swayney.
Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Swayney; five children, Michael Kelly Swayney and Terry Atwood Swayney, both of Huntersville, Chiltoskie Woodfin Swayney III of Charlotte, Sonya Lynn Swayney of Coates and Katherine Minnie Harrison of Monroe; three sisters, Delores Swayney of Charlotte, Carolyn Lawson of Davidson, and Patricia Parks of Hertford; and five grandchildren.
Moody Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Emma Buchanan
Emma Lee Deitz Buchanan, 90, of Dillsboro Road, Sylva, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Harris Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Sylva First Baptist Church. The Rev. Wayne Hill officiated. Burial was in East Fork Cemetery. Pallbearers were Sam Clemmons, Davis Buchanan, Rick Deitz, Steve Deitz, Sam Beck and Bud Plemmons.
A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was a gardener and a member of Sylva First Baptist Church, where she worked in the nursery for 26 years. She was a daughter of the late Hanley and Mary Etta Morgan Deitz.
She was preceded in death by one son, Charles Buchanan; and four brothers, R.V. Deitz, Woodrow Deitz, Jesse Deitz and Taylor Deitz.
Surviving are her husband of 69 years, Frank Buchanan; one daughter, Judy Whittman of Charlotte; two sisters, Georgia Lewis and Margie Buchanan, both of Sylva; and three grandchildren.

Helen Ashe
Helen Buchanan Bryson Ashe, 87, of Charlotte, formerly of Winston-Salem and Cullowhee, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, in Charlotte.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, in Moody Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was at Fairview Memorial Gardens.
She was a resident of Elmcroft of Little Avenue Assisted Living and had lived in Charlotte for several years. She was born in Webster in 1913 and graduated from Western Carolina University.
She married Carson Bryson and lived in Cullowhee until his death. She taught at Johns Creek and Glenville Elementary schools and was a member of Cullowhee United Methodist Church.
She married Zeb Ashe and moved to Winston-Salem, where she taught in the Forsyth County Schools and was a member of Friedland Moravian Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Bryson Davis of Charlotte; one sister, Nan Swaggerty of Fort Myers, Fla.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jimmy Oocumma
Jimmy Oocumma, 53, of Cherokee, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, following a period of declining health at Tsali Care Center.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at Cherokee Wesleyan Church. The Revs. James "Bo" Parris and Patricia Crockett officiated.
A native and lifelong resident of Cherokee, he worked at Vocational Opportunities of Cherokee. He was a son of the late John Oocumma Sr. and Alice Littlejohn Oocumma.
Surviving are one sister, Caroline Oocumma; and four brothers, Dave, Jerry, Ray and Henry Oocumma.

Linda Owle
Linda Beck Owle, 58, of Cherokee's Birdtown community, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Tsali Care Center after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Revs. Tommy Ashe, David Burch and Kevin Brooks will officiate. Burial will be in Owle Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim Douthit, Richard Ollis, William Styles, Jim McNabb, Joe Wolfe and William Bradley.
A native and lifelong resident of Swain County, she was an interior decorator. She was a member of Arlington Baptist Church in Bryson City and attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Charles Jackson Beck and Hazel Barker Beck Lewis.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Lloyd Carl Owle; one son, Gregory Owle of Cherokee; two brothers, Raymond Charles Hensley of Hampton, Va., and Larry Eugene Beck of Franklin; and two grandsons.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
