A major accident Friday morning at the intersection of U.S. 23 Business and N.C. 107 tied up traffic for several hours. A tractor-trailer overturned onto two cars, and three other vehicles were involved, according to early reports from the Sylva Police Department. Three people were transported to Harris Regional Hospital. A hospital spokesman said two were treated and released and the third was admitted in stable condition. Traffic was detoured around Skyland Drive, Harold Street and Chipper Curve Road until mid-afternoon.

A tractor-trailer that apparently was having trouble with its brakes crashed through Sylva's busiest intersection Friday and overturned, partially crushing two cars.
The wreck occurred at 10:28 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 23 Business and Main Street. Traffic was rerouted onto Skyland Drive, Harold Street and Chipper Curve Road until the intersection was reopened at about 2:45 p.m.
Onlookers continuously expressed amazement that no one was killed and that only one person required overnight hospitalization.
"Everybody was very fortunate to not have been killed or very seriously injured," said Sylva Police Officer Davis Woodard.
James Wayne Maney, 58, of Bryson City, was the only one involved in the accident to be admitted to Harris Regional Hospital. He was released Saturday.
